In this image we have a whole lot of things working together, making the vision of the open social web real, today, right now.
First, this is not Bluesky. It's , a European variant of the app with its own features like post editing, a curated newsroom tab, and screenpets.
Second, notice at the top that we are not in the Following feed. We're looking at a custom feed called Near You, by , which filters for post from accounts either self declared or determined to be based in my city, Boston Massachusetts. You can see that WBUR has a couple labels from ATlas, marking the account as Bostonian.
Third, let's talk about . I can see they are verified. Upon clicking into that checkmark, I can see who verified them and when.
But that's not the only trust signal I have. They also use their website as their handle, wbur.org. Only the real WBUR could access that domain to use it as their name on the Atmosphere.
Five, another label. The post shows the label "Public Broadcaster". Let's see what that means.
I can see that the label was applied by , a service which labels media accounts with context about their ownership and business model.
All of those signals and context contribute to a well informed reader. By the time I get to the actual post, sharing a piece of reporting about campus whistleblowers, I am able to react appropriately. I saw this post at all because I chose to scroll a feed focused on my local area, which quickly alerted me to local publicly-funded journalism.
It's just a slice of the world promised by the Open Social Web. One that is real today, available to you right now. So grab an account if you don't have one (I recommend bsky.app, mu.social, or blacksky.community). Pin some feeds. Follow folks. Get in the replies. Try a few other apps that all work with your universal web account, aka Atmosphere account.
